Il gioco delle ombre, noto anche come teatro delle ombre, è un'antica forma di narrazione e intrattenimento che utilizza figure ritagliate piatte e articolate (marionette delle ombre) che sono tenute tra una fonte di luce e uno schermo o una tela traslucida. Le forme ritagliate delle marionette a volte includono colori traslucidi o altri tipi di dettagli. È possibile ottenere vari effetti spostando sia i pupazzi che la fonte di luce. Un burattinaio di talento può far sembrare le figure camminare, ballare, combattere, annuire e ridere.

The shadow play which is also known as shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets) which are held between a source of light and a translucent screen or scrim. The cut-out shapes of the puppets sometimes include translucent color or other types of detailing. Various effects can be achieved by moving both the puppets and the light source. A talented puppeteer can make the figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod, and laugh.
