Proposal for an experential path
This proposal is just one of the different tourist opportunities of the Foundation’s Network of Companies belonging to the hospitality, agri-food, cultural and artisanal chain of Molise.
let’s tell a little story to get into the context of the tuor
The traditional Corsa dei Carri, also called Carrese, owes its origin to the discovery of the Relics of the Patron Saint of San Martino in Pensilis, San Leo.
Legend says that the lords of San Martino and other neighboring countries went hunting towards the sea, among the thickets where once stood the ancient and noble Cliternia and, later, the Monastery of San Felice. Here suddenly the horses knelt without wanting to move and the Lords, digging, found the body of San Leo.
Every Lord contended for the paternity of the discovery to be able to bring him into his own fief, so much so as to come almost to arms. In the end they entrusted themselves to the decision of the Bishop of Larino, they put the body on a cart pulled by oxen that, left free to himself and the will of the Saint, chose to stop at San Martino.
The organized race followed from the thirteenth century a path that led from the forest Ramitelli, properly from Pozzo Porcino, in the village. He chose that road because he was unable to follow the other path that leads to Casalpiano, where stood the ancient convent of San Felice, being the conditions of the ground not suitable for a chariot race.
The race of the carts, continued so through the centuries from 1200 to 1600, but in this regard there are no documents.
The first explicit document on the Corsa dei Carri, by the Magistrate of the Land of San Martino al Duca di Termoli, Domenico Cattaneo, dates back to 9 May 1728 where it is written: "... and every year was celebrated, as is celebrated, the feast of the invention and the Translation mentioned on 2 May... The Massari run with their Chariots, and the first who enters "the door of the village" soles the prerogative to bring the Palio."
From a more "recent" document of May 4, 1878, reported in nr. 16 of the newspaper the "Biferno", we read: "For the ancient ox race... they train each year oxen for this exclusive use... Even brave and fit men become accustomed to it, because the dangers are many and frightening. On the side of the Marina and properly from the Bufalara ( owned by Mr. Norante )a plain spreads out, where the carts of oxen must run for seven miles." In the early nineteenth century the race took on different aspects from the original: the poor farmer who went to compete with the work ox replaced the rich landowner who could afford a small herd of oxen used only for the race.
At the same time the rivalries between the authoritative families of the country were accentuated as they saw in the chariot race a means to exalt their prestige with victory. Thus, out of the spirit of competition, numerous carts were born.
Almost all the rich families of San Martino set up a cart: Sassi, Mancinetti, Raimondo, Tozzi and Facciolla.
In the years from 1837 to 1851 four commoners set up their own wagons: Giuseppe Di Oto, Lorenzo Caravatta, Vincenzo D'Angelo and Antonio Maria Pezzatelli, helped economically by some owners of the village who did not have the opportunity to manually form their own wagon or by those owners who, already having their own wagon, wanted to attract on their side the wagons of these commoners, who in the race could help them.
From 1851 to 1864 there were ten wagons: the Carrese was to be a spectacle of joy and "confusion" since it was raced with 5 pairs of oxen per wagon. Over the years, almost all of these wagons retreated.
In 1897 he competed for the first time the cart of the "Young", which was founded by Giuseppe Belpulsi, with the social colors white - blue.
The most formidable opponent was the wagon of the Bevilacqua family, which remained alive for over a century, from 1820 to 1921, when the Bevilacqua family became part of the wagon of the "Giovanotti" with an important position. The wagon of the "Giovanotti" was born in 1919 with the colors yellow - red.
Since 2007 the Giovanissimi float has also been racing, with yellow green colours.
The chariot Giovanotti and Giovani are the two real great opponents of the traditional Race of the Carts, they are divided by about a century victories and defeats, joys and pains, of this magnificent event.
