Il più importante monumento religioso di Cingoli; già dipendenza dei monaci di Fonte Avellana all’indomani dell’avvento dell’anno mille (papa Innocenzo II confermerà tale proprietà nel 1139), dalla seconda metà del secolo XIII assunse al ruolo preminente fra tutte le chiese del territorio quando il suo santo titolare venne proposto quale vescovo della città e quindi eletto patrono. A tale mede- simo secolo va riferita la costruzione dell’attuale chiesa, in stile romanico-gotico; notevole e di complessa simbologia il portale, eseguito da maestro Giacomo e terminato nel 1295 (come recita l’iscrizione in caratteri gotici).
Sotto il presbiterio, allargato nel 1770, è stata realizzata la cripta dove sono conservate le reliquie di sant’Esuperanzio, rinvenute il 24 gennaio 1495. Al suo interno, recentemente restaurato e fun- zionante, uno strumento del celebre organaro veneziano Callido, opus 305 del 1792.
This is the most important religious monument in Cingoli. It belonged to the monks of Fonte Avellana at the beginning of the year 1000 (Pope Innocence II would confirm this property in 1139), and from the second half of the XIII century it became the most prominent church in the area when the saint whose name it bears was chosen as bishop of the town and then elected Patron. The construction of the Romanesque-Gothic-style church, dates back to the same century. The huge portal with complex symbols was handcrafted by Maestro Giacomo and completed in 1295 (as inscribed in Gothic letters). Under the pre- sbytery, enlarged in 1770, is the crypt where St. Esuperanzio’s remains, unco- vered on 24th January 1495, are kept. Inside the church, there is a recently restored functioning instrument made by Callido, the famous Venetian organ builder, opus 305 of 1792.
