Commissionata a Lorenzo Lotto nella primavera del 1537 dai domenicani di Cingoli per l’altare maggiore della restaurata loro chiesa, la grande tela dedicata al tema del Rosario fu portata a termine dal celebre pittore veneziano nel 1539. L’imponente di- pinto, 389 x 264 cm, è senza dubbio uno dei “capolavori” di Lorenzo Lotto: l’artista ormai quasi sessantenne suggella in questo lavoro la sua cifra stilistica, tecnica, culturale e spirituale; la Vergine del Rosario di Cingoli è in effetti una delle opere più complesse e semanticamente profonde della produzione del sensibile e dotto artista veneziano.
During the spring of 1537, the Dominican friars of Cingoli commissioned this work to Lorenzo Lotto for the main altar of their restored church, and the large painting dedicated to the theme of the Rosary was finished by the famous Venetian painter in 1539. The imposing 389 x 264 cm painting is, of course, one of Lorenzo Lotto’s masterpieces and is a testimony of the style, technique, culture and spirituality of the artist, who was nearly 60 years old; the “Virgin of the Rosary” of Cingoli, is one of the most complex and semantically profound works of the sensitive and intelligent Venetianartist.
