Il Duomo e la sua piazza sono sempre stati il centro di Monza, il centro politico, il centro religioso e il punto di origine dell’antico borgo. 

Lo si deve alla regina longobarda Teodolinda: secondo la leggenda, nei pressi del fiume Lambro, le sarebbe apparsa una colomba che le avrebbe sussurrato “Modo” (“qui”), cui la regina avrebbe risposto “Etiam” (“si”), da qui l’antico nome della città, Modoetia. Proprio in quel punto le regina fece erigere un palazzo e una cappella in onore di san Giovanni Battista, trasformata poi nel Duomo odierno. 

Tra i maestosi interni del Duomo, a destra dell’altare maggiore, si rivela la Cappella di Teodolinda. Appena entrati ci si ritrova circondati dagli affreschi degli Zavattari, uno dei capolavori della pittura del gotico internazionale in Italia. 45 scene, distribuite su 500 mq con ben 800 personaggi, raccontano la vita di Teodolinda. Un sentito omaggio del XV secolo alla regina longobarda, nel quale riconoscere anche i simboli delle due dinastie di allora, i Visconti e gli Sforza. 

Nella Cappella, del tempo della regina Teodolinda rimane solo la più mirabile opera di oreficeria cristiana: la Corona Ferrea. Circondata anch’essa dal mito, che la vorrebbe realizzata con uno dei chiodi della crocefissione di Cristo, il copricapo, in realtà d’oro puro, ha incoronato Carlo Magno, Napoleone e altri potenti sovrani.

Imperdibile il museo di inestimabile valore. Quattordici secoli d’arte e di storia tra capolavori unici al mondo, dall’eredità di Teodolinda all’arte contemporanea. Un percorso lungo più di 1400 anni, durante i quali la storia della chiesa si è spesso intrecciata con quella delle grandi istituzioni politiche e religiose dell’Italia e dell’Europa in una trama di relazioni di cui le collezioni sono una vivida e spesso spettacolare testimonianza.

Frutto della perizia di generazioni di artisti e della generosità di devoti committenti, l’inestimabile patrimonio di reliquie e opere d’arte ospitato nel Museo e Tesoro del Duomo di Monza costituisce una raccolta unica al mondo non solo per la rarità e la preziosità dei materiali, ma perché permette di seguire con puntualità le vicende della Basilica di San Giovanni Battista dalla sua fondazione fino ai giorni nostri.

AT THE COURT OF QUEEN THEODELINDA

The queen of Lombards, thanks to her forward-looking concept of peace culture, considerably marked her and the following Ages. 

The Duomo and its square have always been Monza’s heart, the political centre, the religious centre and the birthplace of the ancient hamlet.

And this is owed to Theodelinda, queen of the Lombards. According to the legend, in fact, in the neighbourhood of the river Lambro, she met a dove and in reply to its question «modo» (here), the queen answered «etiam» (yes), from which came Modoetia, the Latin name for Monza. Right in that place Theodelinda ordered the building of the royal palace and a chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist, later converted into the Duomo.

Among the majestic interiors of the Cathedral, on the right of the main altar, appears Theodelinda's Chapel. As you enter, you are embraced by Zavattaris’ frescoes, one of Italy’s masterpieces of International Gothic. 45 scenes, distributed on 500 sq with no less than 800 characters, tell Theodelinda’s life. A sincere tribute dating back to the 15th century to the Lombard queen, in which you can also recognize the symbols of two dynasties of that time: Viscontis and Sforzas.

Since Theodelinda’s age only the Christian jewellery’s most amazing work has remained, that is the Iron Crown. Surrounded by the myth as well, which has it that it was made with one of the Crucifixion nails, the golden crown was used for the coronations of Charles V, Napoleon and many other powerful kings.

You can't miss the museum of great value. Fourteen centuries of art and history in unique masterpieces in the world, from Theodelinda’s heritage to contemporary art. A long path over 1400 years, during which the history of the Church had often intersected that of Italian and European great political and religious institutions. A system of relations, vividly and extraordinarily represented by the collections of the museum.

The priceless collection of relics, precious metalwork, sculptures and paintings in the Museum and Treasure of the Duomo attests the craftsmanship of generations of artists and the generosity of its pious donors. Unique in terms of the rarity and value of the materials used, it is also a precious chronicle illustrating the history of the basilica of San Giovanni Battista from its foundation to the present day.
