La leggenda più popolare di Langkawi parla di Mahsuri, una bellissima fanciulla che ha lanciato una maledizione sull'isola quando è stata accusata ingiustamente di adulterio 200 anni fa. Nella leggenda Mahsuri è una ragazza di buon cuore che aveva catturato il cuore di Wan Darus, figlio del capo di Langkawi.
Un giorno, mentre suo marito era via per combattere contro l'esercito siamese invasore, incontrò un musicista itinerante di nome Deraman. Presto Mahsuri e Deraman divennero amici intimi, facendo pettegolare agli abitanti del villaggio sul fatto che avesse una relazione con il musicista. Quando suo suocero, Dato Karma Jaya ne venne a conoscenza, si arrabbiò e, per la vergogna, le ordinò di essere condannata a morte. Nonostante le sue proteste di innocenza, Mahsuri è stata giustiziata senza nemmeno un processo. A riprova della sua purezza, la leggenda vuole che le spade usate dagli esecutori testamentari non fossero in grado di ferirla. Solo quando Mahsuri disse loro di usare una spada speciale, tenuta segretamente in casa sua, ci riuscirono. Il sangue bianco è stato visto fuoriuscire dalla sua ferita durante l'esecuzione, come ulteriore prova della sua innocenza.
Mahsuri è così ricordata per la sua maledizione su Langkawi, pronunciata il momento prima di morire: "Per questa tragica ingiustizia fatta a me, Langkawi non prospererà per le sette generazioni future".
La gente del posto credeva che la maledizione non si sarebbe avverata, ma Langkawi divenne presto parte del Siam e durante questa dura regola i residenti morirono di fame. L'isola divenne un luogo desolato, colpito da una catena infinita di disastri naturali.
Solo dalla nascita dell'antenato di settima generazione di Mahsuri nel sud della Thailandia, il periodo è considerato finito. Infatti sull'isola sono stati realizzati con successo diversi progetti di sviluppo e Langkawi ha ritrovato il suo splendore.
THE LEGEND OF MAHSURI PRINCESS
The most popular legend of Langkawi is about Mahsuri, a beautiful maiden who placed a curse on the island when wrongly accused of adultery 200 years ago. In the legend Mahsuri is a kind-hearted girl who had captured the heart of Wan Darus, son of the Head of Langkawi.
One day, whilst her husband was away to fight against the invading Siamese army, she met a travelling musician called Deraman. Soon Mahsuri and Deraman became close friends, making villagers gossip that she was having an affair with the musician. When her father-in-law, Dato Karma Jaya heard about, he got furious and, for the shame, ordered her to be sentenced to death. Despite her protests of innocence, Mahsuri was executed without even a trial. As proof of her purity, the legend says that the swords used by the executors were not able to make any wound to her. Only when Mahsuri told them to use a special sword, secretly kept in her house, they succeeded. White blood was seen springing out of her wound during the execution, as further proof of her innocence.
Mahsuri is so remembered for her curse on Langkawi, which was uttered the moment before she died: "For this tragic injustice done to me, Langkawi won’t prosper for the seven future generations."
Locals believed that the curse wouldn’t come true, but Langkawi soon became part Siam and during this harsh rule the residents died from starvation. The island became a desolate place, hit by a never ending chain of natural disasters.
Only since the birth of Mahsuri's seventh generation ancestor in southern Thailand, the is considered to be over. In fact several development projects have been successfully implemented on the island, and Langkawi has regained its splendor once again.
