Today we bring you to Marzamemi a small fishing village in the province of Syracuse south of the Vendicari Nature Reserve and not far from Pachino and the baroque Noto.
Its origins date back to around the year one thousand, when the Arabs built the Tonnara which for several centuries was the most important in the whole of Eastern Sicily.
The structure of this beautiful village dates back to 1630 when the family of the Prince of Villadorata began a phase of restructuring, expanding the spaces and building around the fishermen's houses and the church of San Francesco di Paola.
Its heart is Piazza Regina Margherita overlooked by the two churches of the village, both dedicated to San Francesco di Paola, its patron saint, the Palazzo di Villadorata and the original fishermen's houses of that era. Worth mentioning is the "Casa del Forno" which most likely was the town's bakery.
The two natural ports, the Fossa and the Balata, frame the village. The latter is more characteristic as it has the shape of a small square, so much so that in the summer season it is used as a theater for events that animate the many tourists.
It is possible to access the village only and exclusively on foot, cars and other vehicles can comfortably park in an adjacent parking lot. The whole area around the Tonnare is full of cafes, bars and restaurants where you can taste a multitude of typical dishes.
In front of Marzamemi there are two islets, on the smaller called Brancati islet there is a private villa, while the larger one is more like a shoal that acts as an entrance to a recently built marina.
