Il colpo d’occhio è notevole. Arrivando dal fondovalle, lo sguardo vola sui pendii ammansiti dai terrazzamenti del Nebbiolo e sul massiccio Corna Mara, a sentinella.
A questi gradoni di terra si riferisce forse l’antico nome longobardo Sundrium, terreno lavorato direttamente dal contadino-padrone. Qui nascono i grandi vini rossi della Valtellina con lo Sforzato, il più prezioso, che fa da capofila.
La città ha lo sguardo sui monti e un cuore antico. Vecchie botteghe si affacciano sulle strade del passeggio che vanno da piazza Garibaldi, circondata dai palazzi ottocenteschi, a via Scarpatetti che conserva le sembianze di un borgo rurale, con le corti rustiche, le vigne a far capolino tra i muri, le case in pietra e i ballatoi in legno. Celate invece nei palazzi sono le antiche stüe in legno di cembro, cuore delle case alpine, come a Palazzo Pretorio. Nascosti sono anche gli stucchi e i trompe-l’oeil dello spettacolare salone da ballo di Palazzo Sertoli.
A questi risponde l’estroverso Castel Masegra che svetta sulla roccia a testimoniare il carattere aspro di queste terre. Al suo interno, con i vivaci affreschi allegorici della Camera Picta e della Torre Colombaia, ci si ritrova proiettati fra gli eroi cristiani e i condottieri saraceni raccontati nel poema cinquecentesco dell’Ariosto. It might have been the great steps of earth to which the ancient Longobards were referring to with the term Sundrium, a land worked by the farmers. Here the fantastic reds of the Valtellina are born, like the unforgettable Sforzato.
The city looking out into the mountains has an ancient heart, where old bottegas face the streets that lead to Piazza Garibaldi, surrounded by 19th century buildings. In Via Scarpatetti, signs of an old rural village have been maintained, between rustic courtyards, vineyards peeking over the walls, and stone houses with wood walkways. Concealed within the various estates like Palazzo Pretorio, are the ancient pine wood stüe at the heart of the alpine homes. The stuccoes and trompe-l’oeil remain hidden as well in the spectacular Ballroom of Palazzo Sertoli.
Meanwhile, Castel Masegra sits atop the rocks, in perfect harmony with the harsh surrounding land. The relatively simple exteriors here house incredibly vibrant frescoes and allegorical paintings of the Camera Picta or the Torre Colombaia, where Christian heroes are depicted from the 16th century poem of Ariosto. In the company of Orlando, we find Angelica, Astolfo, and Bradamante.
