The mainly high and rocky coast of Maratea is about 30 kilometres long and is dotted with numerous beaches, extremely delicate transitional environments of great importance in relation to tourism and the environment. They are made up of various grades of sand, gravel and pebbles, grey and black in colour, all of which are of sedimentary origin, alluvial in nature (Fiumicello and Castrocucco) or are pocket beaches; many are equipped for bathing, whilst others can only be reached from the sea. The map shows 23 of them: from the Canale di Mezzanotte, on the border of Campania, to the Noce River, on the border of Calabria. They are oases of rest, relaxation and fun for thousands of bathers using them between April and November.
The clear waters and beautiful seabeds invite visitors to swim and snorkel, whilst the pedalos, paddle boards and canoes can be used to explore further afield and discover the most remote and enchanting coves and the many beautiful sea caves.
