WEEKEND BETWEEN HISTORY AND TASTE IN UPPER MOLISE

DAY 1 - CAPRACOTTA - PESCOPENNATARO

Arrival in Campobasso and check-in at the hotel. Transfer to the upper part of the village to visit a jewel of our region, the Giardino della Flora Appenninica, a botanical garden located at about 1,500 metres above sea level where plant species of the native flora of the central-southern Apennines are preserved and protected.

A walk through the charming old town, with a visit to Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate and Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo. We will also stop at the town gardens, from where a breathtaking panorama can be observed.

Lunch in a typical restaurant.

After lunch, departure for Pescopennataro and a walk in the Pinocchio Park, a path through the pine forest called 'Bosco dell'Impero'. Pescopennataro is the land of fir trees and stone. This will be followed by a visit to the old town centre, filled with buildings and monuments, including the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostolo, dating back to 1654, but rebuilt in the 20th century after the destruction caused by the world wars, Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, a former cemetery site dating back to 1880, and the Piazza del Popolo fountain, created in the 18th century by Nicola De Lallo, a stone craftsman. Lastly, we will visit the Museo Civico della Pietra “Chiara Marinelli”. 

Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 2 - MONTEDIMEZZO - VASTOGIRARDI - AGNONE

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Montedimezzo, a nature reserve located in the municipality of Vastogirardi. The Collemeluccio - Montedimezzo Alto Molise MAB Reserve was one of the first natural areas, among eight in Italy, to be recognised as a 'Biosphere Reserve' for the conservation and protection of the environment, as part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme. Visit to the Nature Museum and Wildlife Area.

We will then head to Agnone, where there will be a guided tour of the village and a well-known cheese factory, where various typical cheeses will be tasted. This will be followed by a visit to the Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli, supposedly the oldest bell-making factory in the world.
