Lacryma Christi, produced with native grapes of Vesuvius, was already known in Roman times.

The first evidence of grape cultivation on the slopes of Vesuvius dates back to the 5th century BC with vines that, according to Aristotale, descend from the Aminei of Thessaly, brought here by the Greeks.

The roots of the Vesuvian vineyard sink into the dark and porous lava soil, which does not need to be watered as it retains moisture and then releases it.

The name itself Lacryma Christi derives from ancient legends and narratives, like the one that says that Lucifer, an angel expelled from heeaven, in his descent into hell took away a piece of heaven with him.

After the theft, it sank into the bowels of Hell, leaving behind a chasm from which Mount Vesuvius rose.

Jesus, recognizing the stolen Paradise  in the Gulf of Naples, grieved for the theft, wept copius tears and from his tear the soil, on the slopes of the most famous volcano in the world, vecame so fertile that gave life to the first Vesuvian vines, generators of the renowed Lacryma Christi.
