Palazzo Carignano, one of the most original baroque constructions, stands out for its undulating façade in terracotta and for its atrium with the double staircase.

In 1679 Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia-Carignano gave the commission to build the Palazzo to Guarino Guarini, who drew inspiration from Bernini’s drawings for the Louvre.

The layout of the original construction was in the form of a C, opening onto the gardens and stables. In the 19th century a second block was added to house the Italian Parliament, with a new frontage facing the current Piazza Carlo Alberto.

With its present day square structure, Palazzo Carignano is a symbolic place of the history of the Savoy dynasty and the Italian “Risorgimento”. In the palace were born Carlo Alberto and Vittorio Emanuele II, and it was the seat of the Subalpine Parliament and the first Parliament of the newly unified Italia.
