The Rose Garden of Villa Reale was designed by the architects Francesco Clerici and Vittorio Faglia in an area already occupied by one of the formal gardens adjacent to the Archduke’s residence. It has a pond and charming walks among the species of the collections. It is also host to the International Rose Competition, which offers a special prize for the most scented rose.

The Rose Garden fills the area intended for one of the geometrical parterre on one side of the main courtyard and it was established by Niso Fumagalli, a businessman and president of Candy fond of flower growing and in particular of roses. After many travels to France, Belgium, Holland and England, where trade union contests attracted a large audience, in 1964 Niso Fumagalli decided to set up the Italian Rose Association right in Monza. The firsts contests took place in 1965, when the works were still ongoing, and the following editions had special godmothers, such as Princess Grace of Monaco in 1970 and the Nobel Prize winner Rita Levi Montalcini in 1991.

The layout offers different thematic sections according to the rose collections planted. Certain old varieties are located around the pond, while climbing roses can be found along the railings and on the pergola. Most of the space is dedicated, anyway, to the roses taking part in the annual Competitions. These present over four thousand varieties, created by rose growers from all over the world. The jury includes international technical experts, poets, artists and fashion or television personalities.
