The Civic Museums of Monza gather the collections of the Civic Gallery and the Historical Museum at the Arengario. They were founded in 1935 thanks to a relevant bequest from the Galbesi Segrè family to the municipality in 1923.

Over the years the collections have enriched with work of art and different repertoires drawn from donations, purchases and the most relevant artistic and cultural events which took place in the city during the 20th century, as Biennali, ISIA, City of Monza Painting Award and more recently Biennale for young artists. Since its birth, then, the Museum owns a rich selection of ancient and modern printings, which make up the Gabinetto delle Stampe.

In the current location at via Teodolinda, obtained from the refurbishment of an old palace belonging to the Humiliati medieval religious order, the Museum houses symbolic works showing the historical and artistic changes occurred in Monza.

Its exposition itinerary follows a precise architecture and offers the possibility to admire 140 pieces of the civic art collections chosen among the consistent properties of the municipality. The works are divided into 13 sections, distributed in the museum’s rooms at the ground floor and at the first floor. The guest is invited to discover these works following a chronological order - from the Romans to the 21st century art - or thematic, moving from the portraits to the landscape, or from the religious art to the paintings and sculptures of the 19th and 20th century. An ideal travel across the history of art in Italy.

A great part of the collection focuses on the relationship between the museum and the city: an entire section is dedicated to Monza and many of the works of art recall important places or moments of the history of the city. The guest is, therefore, recommended to exit the museum and continue to explore the city, its churches, its palaces, known corners and hidden - but nevertheless suggestive - views.

The Civic Museums of Monza also host exhibitions which every year animate Monza and bring influences from all over the world. Events like “Monza in Acquarello”, the exhibition “Le immagini della fantasia”, but also the performative art festival “Monza visionaria” and the historical commemorations recur every year in the galleries and streets of Monza.
