Theodelinda’s Chapel (or Zavattaris Chapel)

The frescoes of the Chapel is considered one of Italy’s masterpieces in International Gothic painting and the outstanding work by Zavattaris, a milanese family of painters working in Lombardy for the whole 1400.

In Theodelinda’s Chapel is held the Iron Crown, one of the most significant goldsmithery’s masterpieces in the whole Western history. The most important religious and mythical symbol of the christian Western world, used to coronate italian kings. You can still feel its energy and charm.

Miraculously conserved until now, the Crown is composed of six golden plates – adorned with rose relieves, gems settings and enamel – with a metal ring inside, that names the Crown as “iron”, told by tradition to be a nail from the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. A holy relic that Saint Helen found in 326, moving to Palestine and then put into her son’s crown Constantine the Emperor. The tradition that ties up the Crown to the Passion of Christ and to the first Christian emperor, tells the symbolic value given by the kings of Italy (and by those who would have been so called, like the Viscontis), who would have used it to coronate with the divine origin of their own power, strictly tied up with the Roman emperors of the past.

A museum for a priceless treasure: fourteen centuries of art and history in unique masterpieces in the world, from Theodelinda’s heritage to contemporary art. The Museum and Treasure of the Duomo of Monza is an exceptional collection, not only because of the rarity and value of the materials used, but also because it allows to take a trip in history for over 1400 years, during which the history of the Church had often intersected that of Italian and European great political and religious institutions. A system of relations, vividly and extraordinarily represented by the collections of the museum.
