Pavia and its province are enriched by the presence of attractions full of history, tradition, art, historical figures and obviously flavours, all just a few steps from Milan.

Our point of departure is Pavia and its famous Ponte Coperto covered bridge, which can be considered one of the symbols of the city. What we see today is a post-war reconstruction, based on the model of the original Romanesque bridge, destroyed by heavy bombing during the war.

Another identifying symbol of the city of Pavia is the Visconteo Castle, built at the end of the 14th century by order of Galeazzo II Visconti.

We cannot fail to mention the renowned Certosa di Pavia monastery, built under the will of Gian Galeazzo Visconti as a ducal mausoleum.

Pavia is also a famous university city. In fact, the University of Pavia has a great history spanning many centuries. It was founded by Lothair in 825 as a school of law, rhetoric and liberal arts and later transformed into a Studium generale in 1361 by Emperor Charles IV.

The Basilica di San Michele is a twelfth-century Longobard place of worship where for centuries, the kings of the Kingdom of Italy were crowned, including the future emperor Federico Barbarossa.

Moving away from the city of Pavia, we come across the town of Belgioioso. Here stands another fantastic castle of the Visconti family, a place of hunting and recreation for the Dukes of Milan. Today it frequently hosts fairs and events. The castle is characterized by fourteenth-century features present in the most ancient part of the building. These features are accompanied by the neoclassical style of the noble wing, while the stables were designed by the architect Leopold Pollack.

The city of Voghera, known as Iria by the Romans, was firstly a county, then a marquisate and finally a province, founded in a strategic point between Bobbio, Tortona and Pavia.

Let’s now mention a Renaissance pearl of the province: Vigevano. The city is renowned for its square, considered as one of the most beautiful in Italy, along with the famous Bramante tower.

We should also mention other multitude of places of history, art and culture, present in the territory of the Province of Pavia, such as Lardirago, Chignolo Po, Casteggio, Cicognola, Rivanazzano Terme, Garlasco, Arena Po, Zavattarello, Lomello, Varzi, and many others.

Come and discover the charm of Pavia and its province, which preserves the ancient passage of Roman and Longobard culture and tradition through its castles, works of art, churches and many more.
